Adding videos - player only shown for linked videos

Description
Is there any good reason why the videos that are added as links get a pretty interface for viewing them, and those that are uploaded are just sent as regular downloads?
If we try the workaround of adding the video first as an upload and then linking to it, something fails, possibly because of special character escaping.
